Week 11 - Vinyl Success

The Meeting

This week we only had a small meeting on the Thursday as there wasn’t much to discuss everyone was off doing their own thing and no real advancements had been or needed to be made so we spent most of the meeting just catching up on where everyone is and making sure everyone is on track, which they were. This is great as it means we are heading towards the deadline on time and with everything is order as it should be. A full budget was also proposed to the group which all went down well and fit in with the previous rough budget set out. We also talked about the invitations as the design was almost completed and how we were going to print them and whether or not they would be double sided or if we would just use a sticker for the address and keep it one sided, after a unanimous decision we decide to use stickers as it would be the cheaper option and we can put that money somewhere more important which is good. We also discussed the name tags, as in the layout names will need to be next to the work to inform people of who’s work it is, my initial idea was to paint them on near the top of the boards to match the vinyl theme but after some discussion no one else is really keen on the idea and it will mean a lot of extra work so instead we decide on foam board name tags which will be quicker and more efficient.  The only other thing to come up was the booking or the boards and when is it happening, we hadn’t planned to book the boards for a while but since it had been brought up and we were getting closer we told them this afternoon, and later that afternoon I sent the email to Lance to put in motion the booking of the boards for the exhibition and so getting that out the way early and efficiently. (email shown below)

In conclusion it was a pretty uneventful meeting and not much really happened other than the booking out of the boards, as well as sorting out the invitations and name boards, though it is good to know everyone is on track and that we are heading in the right direction and that communication in the group continues to improve and hopefully build of the small progress made today.

The Layout Planning

We began this week’s work by trying to sort out the vinyl’s and get the ordered and priced out, to do this we as the Layout team went to the Print Studio to see how much it would cost to get what we wanted, the quote collage gave us for just one was £40, that means if we did all the boards we wanted it would come up to an extortionate £200. This was way out of budget and needed re-thinking so we began to shop around, I send an email out to both Trent Creative and Hardy Signs (two local sign printing companies) to see what they could offer. (message below)

However before we could get a reply Dany from what use to be the Venue Team but where now Marketing and Finance Team helped us out by both creating digital versions of the designs and then to boost hooked us up with an offer of getting them all done for free from hardy signs since her father worked there and partially owned the company. This is a great advancement as it saves on the budget and solved the ordeal quickly so we can move on to other work. It also show that communications in the group are doing great and that things are really starting to shape up between the the relationships which will also benefit the project int eh long run. Later that day we all sat down and showed our photography layout design to each other; Tasha’s featured a curved back panel with a free standing wall coming away from the pillar in the middle. I really liked this design it let the light in well and offered a nice entry point for people to come in and view the work from. Paige’s was less a single design and more a variety of possible layouts and shapes that could be used, in their own right each design would need work for it to be completed but offered a lot in terms of making the final design and used them in combination with other designs. (Tashas on top, Paige's below)

After a bit of discussion we agreed on the back panel of my design but couldn’t figure out what to do the free standing boards and what sort of shape. It was only after about 30 minutes of brain storming Tasha came up with the idea of a triangular board to the pillar, then Paige came up the idea of having a board come of the room to meet the triangle create two separate ahead with a nice interchange between them creating a two great spaces. (shown below)

The next day we spent the time to mark up the final space and get all the final measurements for the Graphic Design department as well as the Fashion Department, we then decided that we would continue that next week and hopefully get all the designs for them finish and completed which would mean a complete detailed plan which we can put to the group. This is great as it means we can them move on to purchasing what we need and being to plan the days leading up to the exhibition in preparation for it.

In conclusion it had been a very successful week for the layout planning, as we have managed to get photography sorted which leaves only half of the design to do, and we have now got the vinyl’s sorted and are now in the process of being cut and made for us in time for the exhibition. Overall this went so well on every level that I don’t think there would be anything I could change as it was all successful this week, I can only hope for more weeks like this.
